Blart Book Review

Blart, The Boy Who Saved The World, has been the story we've been reading in Room 17. It is a story about a kid who is called Blart and he really loves Pigs but, hes not the brightest person.

One day a wizard called Capablanca comes to Blarts House and tells Blart how he is the only one to save the world from Zoltab and says he is the first son of the first son of the etc etc etc... Blart doesn't want to save the world but he is forced to by Capablanca's curse on him that whenever he walked away from Capablanca his legs get tangled and he trips into the mud! But, when he walks to Capablanca everything is just right and nothing happens.

They finally meet a warrior called Beowulf in an inn and they go on the quest to stop Zoltab together and as they keep walking they thought about capturing a horse that can carry three people at a time. They go to a mountain where they could find the horse and then Capablanca traps them all inside a rock tunnel he makes with his magic and both Beowulf and Blart get a rope and they try to catch them with it but Beowulf misses and Blart captures the Biggest one there. They manage to control it and it becomes their horse. They name it Pig, the only name he likes.

They go to find a friend Nimzo for knowledge about Zoltab but it's not really what they expected from a wizard (a retired one). They find out that Pig can fly, from Nimzo's knowledge and they finally helped him learn to fly but then they get attacked by Zoltab's Minions. Beowulf falls off into the sea and then he gets rescued by Blart after a lot of thrashing about and when they reach land Beowulf moans about his armour is rusting.
Then read on to find out what happens next because we won't tell you! Well, thats only because thats where we stopped.

Its an awesome book and everyone in the class is enjoying it. You should read it! It is very interesting and funny too.

It can be found in the chapters section in the library and don't forget to read on for the next books. THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!

Nicholas Nickleby

In room 17 we are (obviously) doing reading and half of my group, Mangu is reading Nicholas Nickleby and it is about a 19 year old that works for Dotheboys Hall as an assistant teacher with a headmaster Mr Squeers who hurts the kids if they do something wrong because Nicholas's father died and he has no money .
Smike mostly gets hurt and he doesn't want to go to the school anymore. Mrs Squeers feeds the children Brimstone and Treacle because it's cheap and it spoils their appetite.

Nicholas sometimes talks to Smike and Smike asks about the outside world, outside of Dotheboys Hall and one day Smike thinks of running away and he runs away but then gets found by Mr and Mrs Squeers. He stars getting really tortured by Mr Squeers with a cane but then Nicholas Nickleby stops Mr Squeers and then he leaves the school with Smike.

We also have to do a worksheet about the book and one of the activities are to design a schoool using Kid Pix on the computer or in your book. Another activity is a Summary about what happens in the story and other activity of 5 things you would never have happen at your school like torture the kids for just doing one thing wrong and you also have to write why.
Some other activities are to do iRead on the computer and comment on other people's blogs. Another activity is doing a worksheet which sometimes have nothing to do with the book we're reading but it is still about reading.

Weather Alert & Volcano Awakes

Two weeks ago I was told to read a book called "Weather Alert" for my reading. Weather alert was about Cyclones, Hurricanes, Thunderstorms, Tornadoes and Typhoons. When I was done reading the book I got a sheet which said " Words, words, words" That meant I had to find 7 words that I didn't understand. I was pleased with my words. I had to do the next option from the sheet. The words from the sheet said "The Glass Eye" And I said "What the heck was the glass eye?" Then my friend said " The glass eye is a reading sheet in your box. Everyone has it" I said " Oh Thank very much " So I got the sheet and started writing the answers. Finally I was almost done. I just had one more to go! The sheet said " Make a Mini Weather Project " I was so excited! So I got to work. These were the things I needed to make the project. A box, sticking tape, scissors and colouring pencils. I made a mini Tornado! I was happy with my project!

One week later I was told again to read another book called " Volcano Awakes " Now this time I had to do the same things. When I was searching for 7 words the words were really easy. I couldn't find the words I didn't know. But luckily I found 7. The next option I had to do was to get the reading sheet called " Looking for Trouble " I knew where it was and got it. The last option I had to do was to make a model volcano. I still have not completed my task but I'm still trying.

Dark Zones adventure

In class we are doing reading and for reading my group Kikorangi [blue], we are learning about caving and what to do and what not to do and the equipment you need.
Also all of the different species that live in caves and the food chain, as well as the different specimens and plants the most odd in my opinion is Stalactites and Stalagmites.
Here is the funniest part and the grossest is that crickets and Bats leave their poop [Guano] and then Snails and Round worms eat it eeeeewwwww!
There is another thing you need to know never ever take anything from a cave as a souvenir or touch anything in a cave or, don't be silly enough to eat stuff off the walls or the floor or you could be eating poop [Guano]!
For the last thing we are doing we have to do a news report on caving.

The Mary Celeste

I think there was a mutiny on board the Mary Celeste, this is what I think happend;
Five of the crewmen on the Mary Celeste got into the cargo of alcohol and got drunk. Then they got the captains sword and started killing the rest of the people on board, once they had done that the threw the people they had killed overboard. Then after they had done that, they felt guilty so they used the blood-stanied sword to make cut marks around the boat so it looks like pirates had boarded, then in a hurry the five crewmen took the captains papers a got away in the life boat.

Atarah's Mary Celeste Theory

What I think happened to the Mary Celeste is that there was a mutiny. The clues say that there was bloodstains in a few places and on a sword. I think that when the captain and his family were thrown overboard, after a while the crew realized that they would get in trouble so they just dropped or left whatever they were doing. That is why there are a few broken things on board. After that they left with the rope on the life boat just in case they had to build a raft. I think they also took the sextant, so that they can navigate their way around. They also took the chronometer so that they could keep track of time. They also took a few pieces of paper. I also think they probably left because there was a leak. That is why the deck pump was recently measured and that is why there was also water in the gully. They didn't want people to know that they had killed the captain and his family so they cut marks on the side of the bow and on the starboard rail, so that people would think is what something or somebody else. I also think they watered down the alcohol and drank after they killed the captain and his family. They left with the lifeboat, the rope, the sextant, the chronometer and the papers. That is what I think happened to the Mary Celeste.

Awesome Reading in Anawhata

On Monday 26 April my group(Whero the red group) all got a book called 'The Volcano Awakes'!
It was a really awesome book because it told us all about Volcanoes. Like when a Volcano erupts - rocks come down at a speed of 60 kilomteres and faster.
Our first activity was green hat and white hat thinking. This is when you write down all the new thing we learn from what we have read and the white hat is when you write down all the new facts you learnt.
Our next activity was to choose 7 new or unusual words and write then down to show we know what the word means.
My third activity was a sheet we had to complete the sheet was called "The Glass Eye" this was easy because what you had to do was there were some sentences with some gaps in the sentences and under the of all the words was a little box with words in it those were all the word that fit into the gaps.
My last activity and most favourite I had to make a model volcano, at first we had to plan it, I was sitting at my desk for a while because I couldn't think of anything but just when I said 'I couldn't think of anything' well I did! So I had finish planning what I had thought of as quick as I could. Then I hop out of my seat and I said 'lests do it!'
First I got a box and one peace of black paper and one big peace of white paper then after that I got the black piece of paper and what I did with It was rolled it up like a big toliet roll then I put it into the little box then I got the white paper and cut It into sort of big peaces of stips then I cellataped the four peace to the top of the paper to the top of the black paper then I stuck the other end of the paper the the bottum of the box. Then after that I painted my volcano black then while It was drying I got some sand from my friend Leija and sprinkled a little sand all over the volcano and I put some little rocks on it as well.
Finally I knew that I was FINISHED.

Secret Codes for Reading!

We have been learning about codes as a reading activity, it is cool, creative and fun.
We have been learning about different types of secret codes. Morse code, number codes, cipher wheels and the nato phonetic alphabet - we have been doing it in and out of class. It is our fun current reading activity.
Number codes are probably the easiest to do - then the hardest is the morse code.
We got into smaller groups and we read the 4 pieces of paper out of the book The Dangerous Book for Boys, and to practice the codes in our little notebooks. We got to write our name in three different ways. The cipher wheel was to hard because we couldn't understand it. It was so much fun!

Fun with Reading

We did some fun activities for reading this term. All of the groups did different things - made a movie, created a giant mural about the book The Magic Finger, read about some Matchbox tricks, learnt about different secret codes and wrote messages using Navy flags. It was great fun that we almost forgot we were doing Reading!

Fun Tricks

On Thursday the Mangu group did some freaky tricks. One of the tricks was called the blood trick and the second was the Bee trick.
On the blood trick we used match boxes, cotton wool and red vivid to make it look like blood. We then told people we cut off our finger - it was a great trick of a finger. Everybody thought our finger were bleeding but it was just red vivid.
To make the red Bee we put a red vivid letter B to make it think we caught a red bee. It was funny when everyone thought we caught a dead Bee. We told everybody that it was a trick.
We enjoyed it when people thought we had cut our finger for real.

Fun Matchbox Tricks

Today, on Thursday 25 March we did some magic things with matchboxes. I'll tell you the things that you need to do for the magic finger trick.
We got some match boxes then we had to get sciccors and cut a hole in it. Then we got some cotton wool and cut a hole in it as well. We got a red vivid and put some fake blood on and put it on the cotton wool.
At the end we made people believe that we cut off our finger. Try and make your own.

Matchbox Tricks

On the 25th of March 2010, room 17's Mangu reading group read about some matchbox tricks. Miss Davies told us to work together. We all got the stuff ready for the trick. Viliami, Abhishek, Bridget, Samantha, Ruby and Anjali all did the magic tricks. The first trick was that we got a matchbox and cut a hole in it. Then we placed the cotton wool in the box, coloured it red to make it look like blood. We then put our middle finger through the hole, bent it so that it looked like our finger was cut off. They said it looked fake! So don't try it.
The second trick was that we get a matchbox and write the letter B in the colour red and we showed some people in the class. We told them that we got a red bee and they fell for it - kind off.
We learnt that reading can be fun!

Welcome to Read n' Blog 2010!

This is all new to us, so it may be a slow start. Our aim here is to 'just write'. We want a chance to write our stories, poems, recounts - basically anything that means something to us.
So have a read and leave a comment - we really enjoy getting feedback, as it helps us to improve and enhance what we write.
Enjoy our blog one and all!
